Even with all my years of training as a psychologist, I didn’t initially see that true healing wouldn’t come from outside. We are conditioned to believe the answers were out there, in the medical establishment. But as I watched my child struggle under the weight of these labels, something within me shifted. There had to be another way.
The Power of Heart-Brain Coherence
The transformation we were seeking didn’t come from external solutions but from the incredible process of heart-brain coherence. This simple yet profound practice taught us to regulate our nervous systems from within, moving us from survival mode to a place of peace and resilience.
It’s basic science. When we enter a state of heart-brain coherence, our heart and brain begin to synchronize, and the signals from our heart start telling our brain that we’re safe. It starts sending signals aligned with feelings of calm, joy, and love; rather than signals aligned with frustration, sadness, or fear. This changes the very chemistry of our brains, decreasing the release of stress hormones like cortisol and instead releasing chemicals like dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and DHEA—the ones responsible for our sense of well-being, connection, and calm.
In this coherent state, our nervous system resets, moving us from reactivity to a place of balance. Over time, my daughter and I could fully experience true, embodied emotions like gratitude, joy, and peace. And these changes weren’t just mental or emotional—they were physical shifts in our body and brain chemistry, creating a foundation for lasting transformation.
The Answer Was Within Us All Along
But this wasn’t just my child’s journey, it was mine. I soon realised that to help her reset her own nervous system, I needed to do the same for myself. As I practiced heart-brain coherence, bringing my own nervous system into a state of calm, I became a mirror of that state for her. My inner peace created an environment where she could also begin to release her fears and anxieties, allowing her nervous system to reset naturally.
Our children don’t just learn from what we tell them; they learn from the energy we bring into our lives. By shifting my own nervous system, I transformed my energy, which in turn shifted hers. My calm became her calm… my joy became her joy.
And the labels she had been given? They no longer “fit” because they were never truly who she was; they were simply projections of the energy in our systems. When we finally connected with the power that had been within us all along - the power to heal - the labels simply fell away.
We Were Never Broken
With every step in this journey, we began to see the truth: we were never broken. Through heart-brain coherence, we tapped into our own resilience and strength. The labels that once defined us became meaningless as we connected with our deeper selves. Now, our lives are filled with flow, joy, and connection. We had discovered that everything we needed to heal and grow had been within us all along.
Healing from the Inside Out
Our journey has shown us that true healing starts from within. Heart-brain coherence allowed us to break free from the limits others had placed on us, to let go of the constant “fix-it” mentality, and to reclaim our wholeness. The key wasn’t outside of us; it was within, waiting to be discovered.
